Preparing for the end of recession

If the economists are right.. they expect most recessions to last about 18 months. If that is the case here... that means that our current financial troubles should be wrapping up around this summer. Whether you like the new President or not... whether you agree with his financial policies or not.. the economist still believe we will recover from this.

So - presume that the experts are right... what are you doing to prepare for the new surge of business that is sure to come? How are you preparing for the next increase in business opportunity? I think this might be a great discussion for this group!

Starting my own business

Hi everyone!
I'm kinda new to the field of business and was wondering if anyone was willing to help me.

Right now I am currently going to college for a major in Business Management with an emphasis in Marketing.

I have owned my own business before, but due to credit card fraud and forged money orders and my server oing down. I haven't bothered really to start it up again.

I calculated the costs of opening my own retail/hobby store with merchandise... which totaled up to almost $3million.

Can anyone help me find a good place to host a site? credit card processor? suppliers? anything would be helpful!..

How do I choose a business?....There are so many....

When I evaluate a company, I look for these key points. Keep in mind, when I join a company, my #1 goal is to make money and to do it legitimately. I do not want to hurt anyone or rip anyone off. This is what I’ve learned and these guidelines will help you determine what company is right for you.
If you are not making at least 75% of the upfront commission when you make a sale, forget it. This means that you are doing all the work and the company and/or the person above you is making all the money.
If you have to have 1000, 10,000 or 20,000 people in your organization before you make any real money. DO NOT Join. Most people will NEVER get there.
If they teach you to hold home parties and invite all your friends. Run away fast.
If they have a sales pitch 2-3 times a day and only 2-3 training classes per week. This means that the company is more interested in selling you than training you how to make money long term
If you can’t break even or get into profit with 3 sales, forget it.
If you can’t speak with the owners or the corporate office via phone or webinar, Forget it. I like to know who I am doing business with before I will do business with them.
If it is a start up or in pre launch, forget. The chances of these companies becoming the next Amway is about as good as winning the lottery. At least with the lottery, you have a chance to win once or twice a week. You might as well go to Vegas and blow your money on a good time. At least you’ll have some great memories, see a great show and have a great meal.
These are not all the rules for success on the internet, but this is a great guideline to follow when evaluating an internet company. Use these guidelines to help you narrow down your choices for choosing a company that best fits yours goals.

Presenting a bid

I have put together a large bid, larger than what I usually deal with and for the first time I am representing a group of people, with higher expertise than me.

This is something that could provide us with work for years to come.

How are such things usually managed? It was sent in last week but I haven't heard from them since. The person in charge was away.

When I finally reached him, he told me that I would get the O.K. in a week but also that he was not the final decision-taker.
I have not been able to reach the final decision-taker and I do not want to come across as frantic but keen.

Any advice?
Any good books on leading negotiations.

One very good piece of advice was to come across as very reassuring and not leave any doubt on the final performance.

can U recommend a simple shopping cart for a small service based busines?

I purchased GoDaddy cart to integrate with QB merchant account, but their cart is more of a storefront and does not integrate with my exsting website well.

Can anyone recommend a simple shopping cart I can integrate? Probably server based. I have about a dozen services i sell that need customization. An autoresponder to the buyer would be ideal. (is that a given?)

Voice recognition

I am now in the market for a voice recognition system and it seems that Dragon Naturally Speaking is the most widely used system. “Dragon NaturallySpeaking Professional 9 is the most accurate speech recognition product Nuance has ever developed - delivering up to 99% accuracy!” It now takes two hours to train to your voice with the demonstration kit (double that for real life) and is only operational in one language if my information is right.

Via Voice (IBM) is a close second and the older versions were very well-liked by users. It has been purchased by Nuance.

Dragon Naturally Speaking also comes in a preferred version and I do not know if that would improve a translator's office performance.
I am a fast translator but a terrible typist.

It would have to be installed on my portable. Dell tells me that there is only one licence per machine but that it is the same software for the portable and the table computer..

Any experience with these?

We are all Busy

Hello fellow Entrepreneurs...

If there is one thing I understand, it is this... we are all very busy. Recently a client of mine told me that they receive over 300 e-mail messages a day in their mail box. So many e-mail messages come in that they spend nearly a quarter of the day (and I mean after 5PM as well) watching their e-mail box to keep it clean. Unfortunately, most of the mail this person receives in from internal discussions because the executive staff is spread out over the country and a lot of ad-hoc meetings take place via e-mail.

Here are some suggestions I had for the client that I hope will work for you...

1) If you are able to - put a stop to Ad-hoc meetings via e-mail. An appropriate response could be - "This sounds great Susan, lets schedule a meeting next week to go over it with the team..."

2) Turn on your SPAM filter or ask the company to turn on a SPAM filter. I once worked for a company that received on average over 5,000 spam e-mails a day. The staff of 30 people never knew about this spam because it never made it to them. And the occasional SPAM that did make it to them went into their SPAM folder on their local computer. That is almost 200 SPAM e-mails a day for each and every employee. IF you use the SPAM tools you already have you can reduce that number significantly.

3) Set up an additional email Box on your computer or on a FREE service like Yahoo, Google, etc where all of your OPT-IN e-mail is sent. That way you can keep only important company e-mail flowing to your current box.

4) If someone sends you e-mail, you can respond to them with one of the following
a) Please keep sending this sort of critical information
b) Send this to a responsible person on my team, not me (and that person is.....)
c) Please do not send me this kind of information anymore.

5) Develop a company policy that states that e-mail is for company use and not for "FORWARDS", "JOKES," etc...

After a couple of weeks your e-mail load should be under better control.

I am on over 30 Tribes and only a couple of them have a post here or there. Is Tribe.net a dieing social network? There seems to be more activity on MySpace and YahooGroups.

If it weren't for the spammers, AdSense, and MLM offers there would be no activity in most tribes....

Location as a matter of success...?

Does where you live really matter as a fundemental element of your success? I would really like to learn about commercial real estate investing (from apartments to strip malls) from management and development to aquistion and cash flow analysis, etc.

I am considering moving to a small town atmosphere (quality of life reasons) where most of these types of investments would take place elsewhere.

My ideal situation would be to get an entry level position with a company that specializes in real estate investment and learn the ropes. I am not interested in buying flipping or renting SFRs, foreclosures etc.

Am I limiting my growth potential by moving to a small town? Should I suck it up and find an entry level job where ever I can and then take that experience to the small town with me...?

Reaching customers through the Internet

What is the best way of leading an Internet campaign and delivering an identical message to a hundred people minimum?
Also, can an Internet address be used as a temporary site for downloading lesson material and info? I have not created my Web site yet (unless the operation has suddenly become easier and cheaper to create and house) and wish to self-finance.

The Internet is a great tool in its own right plus I live in a remote area where people are scattered

Take my breath away -- a real opportunity?

In my MBA business consulting project have come across an inventor who is a professor and one of the world's authorities in odor control. He has discovered a molecular compound that destroys the bacteria that cause bad breath. He has also invented a pre-shower wash that destroys the bacteria causing body odor. He has also developed sprays for foot and pet odor that are far more effective than the standard products.

The problem is that he has been trying to commercialize his product range for nearly 10 years with very little success.

I am having to assume that his product line meets its claims. He has in the past taken been in contact with the main toiletery and toothpaste manufacturers like Unilever, Colgate, Gillete etc but never managed to close a major deal.

He has patent protection on all his IP. There is no problem regarding food and drug regulations. (After burning through around $900,000 from investors and incubator secured finance, R&D is complete).

The only product he has out in the market at the moment is a license of his compound as part of a breath cleansing chewing gum to a small manufacturer. The product is doing well.

I am still trying to get to the bottom of why past approaches to the big corporates has failed, but in the meantime trying to look forward to market positioning and lining up the sort of target companies that could be relevant. I am concentrating on the breath freshener compound. This compound can go into toothpaste, mouthwashes, chewing gums, confectionary drops, and basically any type of food/drink.

The inventor does not manufacture the compound -- but it is fairly cheap to make -- and his approach (which I think is correct ) is to license or offer it as part of a joint venture. An example of this sort of approach would be nutrasweet.

My thought is to go with dynamic companies that are one tier below the major players and to iniitally aim at the 18 - 25 age group with the product as one that has an 'attitude" based on sexuality and the power of kissing with confidence.

This is a large market and his compound does offer sustainable competitive advantage. Looking for creative ideas and inspiration on how to make this really fly.

So in north america, with the advent of baby boomers retiring there is going to be a glut of businesses that will be available for sale to finance their retirement. However, there are not enough buyers and with the lack of succession planning for many of these entrpreneurial businesses, it is being predicted that there is going to be a crisis with many businesses folding due to no new owners.

And there won't be enough financing for management buyouts either because many banks are unwilling to risk putting their money into buyouts, because they consider them as the same class of startups...

As an entrepreneur, what are you doing for this??

How to best secure payment

I have a technical problem concerning the business I have just started. I am an English E.S.L. teacher entrepreneur operating locally in condition of quasi monopoly in Northern Québec, in a strong growth tourist area. I have recently signed the local banking business.
I am ready to take it to the next step.
Because the local population is generally uneducated, I have designed a language training course under guise of a brunch that would allow the general population to come and practice English in a convivial setting. The whole activity, for now, is slated for two and a half hours of practice plus a half an hour of my answering special question as I am also a translator and willing to provide answers to pointy linguistic questions as a marketing plot. I have found the ideal setting for leading such activities and secured very good prices. I have other similarly planned activities that are raising the same problems.
My problem is how to secure payment for such linguistic activities. My purpose is to make it simple as not to have to hire extra work force and bring the price up and complicate the process. I don’t want to have to restructure my business plan though I may have to do that at one point. I was thinking of a monthly subscription as a mean to develop customer loyalty.
How can I best secure payment in advance: pay pall or other similar outfits, the credit card route (are there traps because there sure are costs), automatic payment through a bank card, checks. I don’t feel like accepting payment in cash at the front door, since I will be busy monitoring, but perhaps I should do that. Any idea of how I should go about this.
This whole English teaching bit is more of a fun thing for me as I enjoy it and it is an effective way of becoming locally known. It is a means of getting me out of the house and interacting and breaking my isolation, always dangerous in a remote country environment.Translation is a higher paid field but I need balance. Just giving you background information.

Seeking a partnership with a private lender

Hello,

I have developed a new concept in servicing Life Science, Biotech, Pharma labs - and I have proven my business model multiple times now, including a couple of fortune 200 companies.

2 years of hard work and endless networking has brought me to the point where I was invited across country to pitch my model for one of the worlds largest biotech companies. This is a long term deal worth more than $2 Million a year. If awarded this contract, they expect to have me in place by the end of summer. Until then, I am running on fumes. I have another project that I have paid a grant writer to help secure $2.1M for - and it is getting some early support from the Dept of Homeland Security.

Point is: I am so close, and I am now broke. From this moment on, my credit will start taking a hit. While I may never go hungry, I cannot drop the ball on my current initiatives by waiting for one of these financing opportunities to strike.

Venture Capital is out. There is no point in building to support their exit strategy. If I can find one private investor who believes in my company, and can financially support this business on short money for 6 months, then the rewards will benefit the both of us for the long term. I would rather buy out a partner than go public at this point. A non-profit group has pegged my industry as a $9 Billion market, with less than 10% penetration. I am poised to be the industry leader with your help.

I am looking for an individual investor for a minimum of $25K - I am aware of the blind investor sites such as Prosper and Allworldprivatefunding - I want to work in a more personal funding relationship.

If you are qualified, it does not hurt to request additional information from me. I know you will be impressed.

Mascots, movies, and other costume related stuff.

Hi! I'm new to this tribe, but not new to entrepreneurship. I used to sell my drawings to the neighbors for a nickel each when I was five years old. The power of being cute!

Anyhow, these days I'm running a very small costume making business, mostly doing fursuits for people in the furry fandom, but with the occasional mascot, fantasy costume, small movie deal, and theater outfit.

I'm posting for two reasons. One, is there anybody in this community that knows anything much about getting into the film thing? I really would like to do more stuff for TV ads, movie FX, etc, etc, etc. I'm really trying to get away from the furry fandom, as they are thoroughly non-prefessional, and a real pain to work with. So, any suggestions there?

Secondly, if anybody here has the budget, (And said budget is generally less than $1,000) to buy a mascot suit, I'd like to offer the opportunity. If you're the kind of business that wants to be seen locally, having a mascot is a wonderful way to be memorable. There are plenty of places to be out in the public's eye, and a mascot suit will stand out a lot more than just another printed banner.

Hello Everyone,

Once Upon a time in a Digital Village is a distance learning project that will be hosting Stephen Ujlaki, Chairman of SFSU's Cinema Department. I am organizing this event as a project for a graduate Distance Education class. All ITEC and Cinema students, along with alumni and others with an interest in Film Producing are welcome to participate.

On Tuesday Dec. 13th, 2005 between 6 pm and 7 pm, Prof. Ujlaki will be giving a one hour intensive "What is Producing" seminar, during the 442 Cinema class in Producing Film and visual media. This is a highly sought after advanced class in the art, and business, of Producing Film and other media projects that are related to film and video production.

If you have ever wondered what types of contracts, talent releases, and various waivers are needed to produce a film or documentary piece that can get distribution or be allowed into film festivals, then this is a rare opportunity to learn and ask questions from an industry profession. An industry professional who is the Chair of SFSU Cinema Dept. and dedicated to pulling away the "veil" of the Film Industry juggernaut's inner workings so students can approach their career with a solid knowledge of industry standards and not a pocket full of mysteries and rumors.

A portion of this project will be conducted in the Collaboratorium (Burk Hall Room 229) with students participating through two-way video and text conferencing. There will be full video and audio support in the Collaboratorium. To use text as a remote communication tool, we will be using Skype (if you want to connect remotely using Skype you will have to download Skype (from www.skype.com) and login use the Skype Chat utility) - we may arrange a second option also, email Robert (me) to get an update on this.

A bit about film producer Stephen Ujlaki, chair of SFSU Cinema Department:

Stephen Ujlaki, a producer of more than 25 feature films, made-for-cable movies and documentaries, was recently named professor and chair of the San Francisco State University Cinema Department, named one of the nation's top film schools last year by Entertainment Weekly.

As vice president of development and production for HBO Pictures from

1983 to 1988, Ujlaki supervised script development, production and post-production for more than 25 films including "Baja Oklahoma"

(Julia Roberts), "Last Innocent Man" (Ed Harris) and "Act of Vengeance" (Charles Bronson).

"Film production involves many of the same administrative, logistical and people skills: ensuring that financial and creative input into the screenplay is heard, keeping everyone happy without going over budget or hurting the picture, resolving conflicts, and maintaining strong leadership and direction," said Chairman Ujlaki.

Ujlaki was most recently president of Panarea Productions, where he produced such feature films as "Loch Ness" (Ted Danson), "Hot Spot"

(Don Johnson, directed by Dennis Hopper) and "Courage Mountain"

(Charlie Sheen) as well as numerous HBO feature films including "Stiletto Dance" (Eric Roberts), "Xchange" (Stephen Baldwin) and "Hostile Intent" (Rob Lowe).

Previously, Ujlaki headed the European Feature and Television Production division for Stone Group France, a production studio owned by actor Michael Douglas. Reporting directly to Douglas, Ujlaki was responsible for bringing productions to the studio, managing film budgets, overseeing co-production partners and managing all personnel and film crews.

"San Francisco State can be known as more than just the 'independent film school,'" said Ujlaki, who founded the film program at Franconia College in New Hampshire and has also taught at the American Film Institute and Brandeis University. "A degree in cinema could also provide a wealth of career opportunities in the film industry. If one does not wish to pursue a completely independent path, there are many other marketable skills that can be developed into such careers as writing, producing, editing, directing and post-production."

It's the last step I have to complete. I have the product that is redundent by nature, patented, overseas production is set up and we are ready to hit the retail market.

Everyone says, "Wow, this is going to make you rich." Yea, we know that. It works, it's innexpensive, and it's a redundent seller. All the parameters of a successful product have been met. Everything is set.

But....

Now what?

I know nothing about sales or promotion and it's time to take our product to market. I need someone with MAJOR experience on taking a billion unit a year - redundent sales product - to market. Full time gig vs part time consulting

I have tried to start my own sales rep buz. Rather than look for a job that has a base plus commision and is full time, I have tried to build up companies that pay commission but are flexible on time and like my area of expertise. There is a job opportunity where I would have to move to china and leave at least one of the local opportunities I have. The other stuff I can possibly do via email and phone calls. The money is good but I would rather do it part time and go over several times a year as opposed to living there all year round.

I think since the times are changing and I like the idea of building up my customers, it makes more sense not to put all of my eggs in one basket. Like supplying to Walmart. Margins are slim and one is vulnerable. It would be a great experience but it could be risky. Any thought on this would be great.

lead generation - how do you ...

I sell consulting services, mostly to attorneys. The bulk of my leads come from cold calling - I have no trouble finding the names of people & firms, but like most of us I'd rather not cold call.

What other methods are folks using to generate leads?

I've heard good things from some folks who've used google ads, I've found most traditional advertising (specific industry journals / trade publications) to be very very low yield, and you have to pay for the ad up front.

What have you been doing? How did / does it work?

Taking Care Of Everything In Unison. A request for support.

I have an easy time staying on a roll doing what I love to do and moving foward according to my deepest values. What slows me down and keeps me from creating still bigger results is my resistance to taking care of that which needs to be taken care of on the more mundane levels of my life. I have so much passion for what I love doing, and very little for those other levels.

Do other entrepreneural tribe-mates have this experience? What has helped you deal with it?

Here is an example. I know I would be able to thrive at a whole new level if I created a new housing/work environment for myself, but my staying focused on the tangible steps of doing that is not easy. Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?

Friends of Curtis is a community effort to support singer/songwriter Curtis Coleman as he battles squamous cell carcinoma, an aggressive cancer attacking his neck and throat. Last year, Curtis’ musical performances helped tens of thousands of children to learn about safety and expressing their own voices. Now, he may lose his own voice forever. Together we can help prevent that.

I have a huge favor to ask of you. We're putting together a FUNdraiser for Curtis, on March 5 at SOMArts in San Francisco. As part of this we are having a silent auction to let people take home some cool items while leaving some more of their cash behind LOL.

Would any of you be willing to donate an item or two to auction off at the benefit? I'd love anything, but if it's something meaningful to you, I'm sure it'll go over great with the crowd.

I have started a consulting firm that focuses on business intelligence/ competitive intelligence for companies.I am young, and having worked in marketing and business development throughout my career I know that I have the skills to provide good results to potential clientele.

Now, I have just finished a pro bono contract for a manufacturer in order to start my consulting firm - they liked my work a lot. I am looking to build a portfolio of 3 more pro bono contracts with non-profits to build my credibility before I actively start pursuing paying clients.

My question is, would you reccommend this type of strategy or should I immediately go after smaller paying clients instead?

As you know - my "big picture" is to eliminate expenses through healthy choices with a consumable product. It is true, I have been researching a company over the past 4 months after first being exposed to them at the Health symposium in the latter of 2004.

Shelley and I have decided to add it to our expense elimination program for the following reasons:
1) It is an amazing substitution to products we purchase weekly and highly consumable.
2) The products are highly versatile and create a very healthy environment for our home and bodies.
3) The company is just over 24 months old and only in the US & Canada
4) The compensation plan and commissionable payouts are the highest I've seen
5) The monthly autoship requirements are possibly the lowest I've seen allowing for less pressure on the associates and a 95% reorder rate with minimal attrition
6) I have met with one of the owners of the company along with the top Associate in Canada and a 15 year veteran in Direct Marketing and the program is set up for all to participate in no matter what other companies the associates participate in presently or in the future.
7) The website & back office is the best I've seen - and the video presentation actually tracks what prospects actually view and then e-mails you immediately to let you know that you have someone interested and what videos they have watched - be it product, be it compensation or all.
8) The testimonials are incredible both here in Canada and the US ( I witnessed it firsthand at the Richmond Private Golf & Country Club at a hosted event by the top Canadian Associate )
9) There is no innitiation fee - product package of your choosing only and after the purchase of either package 1 2 or 3 the associate does not need to start their autoship for 2 months!
10) The products replace the following products we use daily ( which by the way may have harmful ingredients such as Propylene Glycol, DEA, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), Alcohol, Aluminum, Talc and many more. Here are the everyday products they replace:
a) Body soap, hand soap, bath soap,
b) toothpaste
c) Shampoo, Conditioner, Moisturizer ( body, face )
d) First Aid applications, Sunburn applications,
e) Greens products and Flax products
f) Laundry soap, Dish soap
g) Body deodorant, under arm deodorant
h) House cleaners, auto cleaners
and the list goes on........

To sum up: Highly consumable, many applications with health and safety paramount, very exciting compensation plan, low autoship requirements, lateral spending from purchases we make weekly, monthly etc. ( no new added expense! ) with the ability to reduce everyones expenses and very possibly get paid to wash your face, hair, brush your teeth, clean your house, your car, increase vitality and overall health and create a healthy harmonious home & body environment, just over the make or break 2 yr mark, only in the US and Canada presently, positioned under the top Associate in Canada right here in Richmond BC. and ofcourse fits in with Shelley and I's Expense Elimination Program we have implemented for 2005.

Footnote: I polled a few of my most sceptical friends that have always looked down on Network marketing and programs such as this and here is the responses I received:
